This surreally beautiful depiction, surrounded by a corona of gold, is recognized by the Roman Catholic Church as the Blessed Virgin Mary, and can be found in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, and is the most visited Catholic pilgrimage site in the world. Exposed to smoke from fires and candles, water from floods and downpours and, in 1921, a bomb planted by anti-clerical forces on an altar under it, the artwork has miraculously remained undamaged. Like most women, Mary has persevered in the face of adversity, and in our case, dust.
